The Shelby County court square has been the scene of many dramatic and some tragic events which helped shape our community. None was more so than what occurred on a soft evening in the summer of 1918. When news about the death of the areas first soldier reached town, the reaction was sudden and considerable. A large crowd gathered there to witness the burning of all German textbooks from the school. What happened that night was a true test of our local democratic principles.
