Memorial Day Service on the Square & Graceland Cemetery

Each year on Memorial Day, the Sidney community gathers to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Hosted by Shelby County Veterans Services, this long-standing tradition offers a solemn, heartfelt tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.
The day begins at Sidney Court Square, where veterans, families, civic leaders, and residents unite beneath waving flags and the sound of patriotic music. The ceremony features remarks from local dignitaries, a presentation of colors, wreath-laying, and moments of reflection. Set against the backdrop of Sidney’s historic courthouse, this portion of the observance invites all generations to remember the cost of liberty.
The ceremony then moves to Graceland Cemetery, where many of Shelby County’s veterans are laid to rest. Here, attendees take part in a reading of names, a 21-gun salute, and the playing of “Taps”—a deeply moving moment that honors the fallen in silence and solidarity. Families of veterans, Gold Star families, and citizens alike gather to reflect and pay tribute in this powerful closing act of remembrance.
More than a tradition, Sidney’s Memorial Day ceremony is a community commitment—a time to pause, give thanks, and pass the torch of remembrance to younger generations. Youth organizations, local bands, and Scouts often participate, reinforcing the importance of honoring service and sacrifice as a shared civic value.
Whether you’re a longtime resident or visiting family, the Memorial Day Ceremony in Sidney is a moving experience for all. Join the community this Memorial Day as we come together to remember, reflect, and give thanks for the heroes who gave everything so we could live in freedom.
