Bicentennial Events
Local officials will gather for a brief ceremony marking the official planting of Sidney’s Bicentennial Tree. One of the city’s official trees will be planted on the grounds on the south side of the Shelby County Courthouse. The tree will be planted on the opposite side of the walkway where Shelby County’s Bicentennial Tree was planted last year.
Presenters include Shelby County Commissioner Boib Guillozet and Sidney Parks and Recon Director Duane Gaier. Others scheduled to speak include Sidney Tree Board Chair and Bicentennial Committee Member Ann Asher, Certified Arborist and Bicentennial Committee Member Joyce Reier, Shelby County Commissioner and Bicentennial Committee Member Tony Bornhorst, and Bicentennial Committee Co-Chair and Sidney Mayor Mike Barhorst.
Providing music for the occasion will be the Jock Family Singers. The group, including Melissa (Goffena) Jock, Cameron, Elizah, and Elizabeth Jock, have been singing together for several years.

Join the Monumental Building Trustees as they unveil the newly restored Sgt. Baker statue before he gets placed back in his niche at the top of the Monumental Building where he keeps an ever watchful eye on Downtown Sidney. Special remarks will be given by a guest speaker as well as a brief history presentation on the Monumental Building. The first 200 guests in attendance will receive an Osborne commemorative coin. This event is FREE and open to the public!
-The AVTT-TWF Traveling Wall is a replica of the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C. Accompanying the Vietnam Wall this year will be the Field of Crosses, surrounded by flags. There will be 1000 crosses, each will have military dog-tags with the names of US soldiers that have perished while on active duty between 1975 and today. Please join us to honor these men and women.

The Shelby County Bicentennial celebration comes to Lockington. Opening remarks by Lockington Mayor Tracy Johnson, Sidney Mayor Mike Barhorst, and Shelby County Commissioner Bob Guillozet. Presentations by Andy Hite with the Johnston Farm and Indian Agency, Don O’Connor with the Miami-Conservancy District, and Dr. Sarah Hippensteel-Hall with the Miami-Conservancy District. Closing remarks by Shelby County Commissioner Julie Ehemann.
The Shelby County mobile history museum will be on display along with food, beverages, and Jumpy.
This year’s Independence Day celebration in Sidney will be one to remember for years to come. Planned activities include a concert at Sidney High School performed by the Sidney Civic Bank and a fireworks display like no other in our community. Make plans to attend this celebration of our country’s independence and the 200th birthday of Sidney.
Fireworks rain date July 5th.
The Sidney Civic Band will perform at 9:00 p.m. behind the High School at the tennis courts with fireworks to follow at 10:00 p.m.

Hardin was the first County Seat in Shelby County and held that distinction from 1819-1820. The local Courts and Sheriff’s office were empowered at that time and a post office was created in 1820. In celebration of Shelby County’s Bicentennial, the Shelby County Commissioners will describe events that were included in the formation of the County and the Sheriff’s office will lead an activity as well representing their historical presence in the County. The day will also offer live music by local performers and a Classic Car Cruise-In at nearby Purpose Driven Motors.
Musical entertainment includes the Hardin-Houston Local Elementary School Choir at 11:00 a.m. followed at noon by the Sidney based musical quartet known as Stratford Strings. Stratford Strings will be followed at 1:00 p.m. by the Irish Strings from Sidney and then, at 2:00 p.m., the St. John’s Bells from St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sidney will perform. At 3:00 p.m., attendees will be entertained by Stephanie and Jonathan Hale. The final musical performance will be provided by well-known performer Timmy G who will take the stage at 4:00 p.m. and round out the entertainment portion of the day.
Concurrent with this event, the Shelby County Historical Society has organized a antique quilt exhibit at the Hardin Methodist Church and is collaborating with the Gateway Arts Council to host an art show themed “Shelby County” featuring the work from Shelby County area students and adults. Video presentations including Gateway Arts Council’s Images From the Land and Moving A Nation will also be on display.

With the removal of Native Americans after 1830 from the area north of the Greenville Treaty Line, settlers rushed to claim the rich lands of northern Shelby County. Among these were the African American pioneers who established Rumley, a thriving farming community. From its founding in 1837 through the 1880s, Rumley served as a major stop for travelers on the post road northward and a haven for hundreds of African American citizens from the slave south. Although Rumley is gone, its influence continues. Dr. Roy E. Finkenbine from Anna, Ohio will lead this presentation. Dr. Finkenbine is Professor of History and department Co-Chair at University of Detroit Mercy and Director of the Black Abolitionist Archive.
